A cake is usually made of the basic ingredients, flour, sugar, egg, butter (or another fat) and a raising agent, such as baking soda or baking powder and is mostly baked in the oven. But there are also cakes that do not require baking, such as a Cheesecake or a real English Christmas Cake.
As a variation on the basic recipe, many additional ingredients can be added, such as chocolate, fruit (fresh, dried, candid), nuts and flavorings like e.g. vanilla extract. In addition, there are endless possibilities to fill a cake or to build a cake from several layers with a filling in between.
Finally, cakes, in all their shapes and sizes, are ideal to decorate to suit an occasion or a theme (Easter, Halloween, etc.). By combining several cakes in different sizes and shapes, they can grow into true works of art, such as high-rise and richly decorated wedding cakes.
